  Make Moving Easy

Moving Experience

Moving at its best is an unsettling experience for the entire family. Our Executives can help smooth the way and make things easier by providing area information, school data, and specialized neigborhood information.

You'll want to start preparing to move at least a month or two in advance. Feel free to print the following checklist.

Before A Move Checklist

  • Collect cardboard boxes and other containers for moving.
  • Discard items that you will not be moving.
  • Find a moving company, get an estimate. Ask for referrals. Call your local and state Better Business Bureau to check them out.
  • Have draperies and/or carpets cleaned before you move and then pack them for protection.
  • Inform your company of the address change for their mailings - ESPECIALLY your W-2 form.
  • Notify vendors, companies, agencies, and/or people of your move.
  • Request a transcript of your children's school records. Contact the new school.

    Address Change
  • Charge accounts, credit cards
  • Give forwarding address to Post Office four to six weeks in advance.
  • Friends, relatives, and business contacts.
  • Subscriptions - book clubs, magazines, newspaper, record clubs
  • Workplace

    Auto
  • Drivers License
  • Insurance

    Banking
  • Accountant, Stock Broker, Transfer funds, Obtain Credit references

    Government Agencies
  • Federal and State Taxes
  • Social Security (if receiving benefits)
  • Veterans Administration

  • Ask for referrals.
  • Birth records, Medical records, Pet records, Prescription history.

  • Telephone - keep your phone service on through moving day.

    Arriving at Your New Home - Checklist
  • Call a locksmith to change EVERY "access" lock (alarms, sheds, mailboxes)
  • Check any pilot lights in your stove, furnace, hot water heater.
  • Check the telephone gas, electricity, water.
  • Go through you check list above - make sure each item has been completed.
  • Register to vote; file for Homestead Exemption.
  • Register your car with a new state & get new driver's license within the state required time limits.

    FINAL NOTES:
  • Keep track of your moving expenses, some may be tax deductible.
  • The BUSIEST moving season is the summer. Most people move in the first and last days of the month.
